SEMICONDUCTOR CHIP MANUFACTURING

Image
INTRODUCTION   Have you ever marveled over how far we have come from using flintstones? The human race's achievements in all technological fields over the last century are far beyond expectations. The majority of this success is owed to semiconductors. Semiconductors, used in ICs, microprocessors, in every electronic device have led to feats in  communications, computing, healthcare, military systems, automobiles, space missions, artificial intelligence, and every other essential industry.     Are these materials easy to obtain? How are they actually produced? Let’s have a look.   THE PROCESS Making semiconductor devices involve several complicated steps.   1.        MINING The raw material for most silicon, the most commonly used semiconductor, production is the mineral quartzite. Raw quartzite is mostly silicon dioxide (SiO2), and the refining process begins with a reduction reaction to getting rid of the oxygen....

What causes the earthy smell after rain?

Image
If you've ever taken a stroll outside after a storm, you've probably noticed a distinctive smell. Well, that smell is called petrichor, and it's often associated with spring, just like we frequently associate the smell of fresh-cut grass with summer. Here I mean, water itself doesn't have this smell, so why does rain. Let’s think and understand what exactly happens. Well, as it turns out, there's more than one kind of rain smell and several factors that cause it one smell comes before the rain hits the ground it's slightly sweet and sharp. It’s Petrichor! The earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil is technically called petrichor. The term “petrichor” was coined by Australian scientists in 1964. They investigated the aroma coming from moist clay, sediment, and rock. Numerous other studies were conducted later to figure out what causes petrichor and if we can artificially mimic it. The petrichor scent is generally caused due to the secretion of oils b...

Mystery of Teleportation

Putting one step ahead of Albert Einstein The Nobel Prize in Physics 2022 was awarded jointly to Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger “for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science.” Alain Aspect was born in 1947 in Agen, France. Ph.D. 1983 from Paris-Sud University, Orsay, France. Professor at Université Paris-Saclay and ÉcolePolytechnique Palaiseau France. Alain developed a setup to close an important loophole. He was able to switch the measurement settings after an entangled pair had left its source, so the original setting that existed when they were emitted could not affect the result. John F. Clauser was born in 1942 in Pasadena, CA, USA. Ph.D. 1969 from Columbia University, New York, USA. Research Physicist, J.F. Clauser& Assoc., Walnut Creek, CA, USA. John Clauser built an apparatus that emitted two entangled photons at a time, each towards a filter that tested their pola...

Quantum Entanglement: An overview

Image
Imagine if we have some technology which can transfer the signals faster than the speed of light. Amazing right! It can really be lifesaving technology for us. Suppose if we placed this device near to the blackhole at the centre of our milky way galaxy. If the blackhole disappears or explodes for some reason, we will get this notification at the same instant; for the same light will take several thousand years to reach us. This means we will get an extra thousands of years to tackle this problem when the actual effect reaches us. Do we have any such technology? If yes, then how this works and how it will benefit us? Today we use a communication system using electromagnetic waves. This existing technology will not give communication faster than the speed of light as it itself uses light. So, what other options do we have? Quantum Entanglement: To go further let’s come back to time. In the 20th century Einstein proposed a thought experiment where, according to the theory, an ev...
