MIRABAI CHANU-THE INDIAN GIRL WHO IS WINNING HEARTS…….
“Challenges are a part of our lives; it’s our
response to them that decides our destiny.”
Mirabai
Chanu an Indian weightlifter, unknown to no one has a lot to say us about
challenges and destiny.
Mirabai
Chanu was born in a poor family in Nongpok Kackching a small village in
Manipur, India. She was the youngest of the six children her parents had. When
she was just 10 years old she used to go with his brother four years elder to
her to a nearby hill to collect bundle of sticks.
On
her regular routine one day, her brother found it difficult to lift the bundle
of sticks, but the weight of sticks was much less than Mirabai’s ability to
lift up the objects. To her brother’s surprise she carried that weight for
about 2km very easily!! After reaching home she realized that the work would
have been much easier if they had a bullock cart but she soon realized that
they can’t afford it. Then a small 10 year old girl decided that she will
practice weightlifting, win a gold medal in competition, sell that gold medal
and purchase a bullock cart!!
Though
the beginning was small but the results we see now are not at all small…….a
number of gold medals, silver medals in world championships, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and Padma Shree-Fourth highest civilian award in India.
Due
to unavailability of training center in her village ,the 10 year old girl
decided to travel daily 60 Km via train so that she can continue with her
training. One day her train got late and it started raining heavily, she got
caught up in the unknown city at night. She decided to take a halt in the city.
While searching for a residence she saw a half constructed structure on which Arya Samaj Mandir was written. There
she saw a sage and asked the sage that whether she can take a halt at the
temple this night but the reply was negative as the structure was not fully
constructed and it had only one room in which the sage was residing. The other
room was half built with no roof on the top, with no floor but the angles were already
fitted and the slabs of roof were kept near the structure. After Mirabai’s
genuine request the sage agreed and allowed her to stay in that half
constructed room. As it was heavily raining Mirabai decided to construct that
room by herself. She bought the slabs fitted them on the angles and completed
the half structure to full!!
When
the sage in the next morning found that Mirabai has already completed the
construction of that half structured room, he was surprised and in return he
asked Mirabai to continue her training by staying here in Arya Samaj Mandir.
The sage then not only took care of Mirabai but also gave her teachings that
deepened the roots of patriotism and spirituality in her heart.
At
the age of 11 the sage handed over Mirabai to Kunjurani – a renowned
weightlifter of that time. Kunjurani then took her further responsibility and
Mirabai made Kunjurani as her role model. It is quite surprising that Mirabai,
who got an inspiration to be a world championship from Kunjurani, broke
Kunjurani’s record in 2016 by lifting 192 kg of weight!
This
incident added a lot to Mirabai’s life .Teachings that she gained from the sage
and Kunjurani were so strong that Mirabai is now influencing countless youths
all over the globe!
“When patriotism is in your heart no
one can stop you to serve your nation.”
Mirabai is so devoted to her nation that she carries rice from India whenever she goes for tournaments in any part of the world as her food.
“After all I believe that legends and myths
are largely made of truth”-J.R.R.Tolkien.
The
dedication with which Mirabai worked in her early stages of life and is even
now working is something incredible. Her love and devotion for the country is
really inspiring for all youths of India!
But it’s
just the beginning the best is yet to come……..
