Most people are unaware of.
A mental disorder
also called as mental illness, is a behavioral or mental pattern that causes
difficulty in coping with the ordinary demands of life.
They are diagnosed by a
mental health professional or a psychologist or psychiatrist. Mental
disorders are among the most common causes of disability and It’s resulting
disease burden is among the highest of
all diseases.
A 2018 study shows
that over 900 million people worldwide suffer from some form of mental health
disorder. The most common being anxiety and depression.
Anxiety symptoms include
inability to set aside worry and restlessness. Depression causes feelings of
sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. Long term
depression can have a huge negative impact on a person's life. Most of us have
felt depression and anxiety sometime in our lives but it can be serious matter
if it lasts over a longer period of time.
Other lesser-known
mental illnesses are-
Bipolar
disorder- It is also called Manic
depression. Symptoms include high energy, reduced need for sleep and loss of
touch with reality. People with Bipolar often go though manic episodes that last days to months at a time
Schizophrenia- Its characteristics are thoughts and
experiences that may seem out of touch with reality. A person with
schizophrenia can’t tell when certain ideas and perceptions they have are real
or not.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – OCD causes repeated unwanted and uncontrollable thoughts (obsession) or
the urge to do something again and again (compulsion).
Attention
deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) - ADHD is chronic condition that often begins in childhood and may continue
on. It affects the attention span and may result in hyperactivity and impulsive
behavior.
Synesthesia- It is a very unique condition which
involves hearing and seeing sounds. Or when you hear music, but you see shapes,
or hear a word or name and instantly see a color.
Hemispastial neglect - It is a very rare disorder where a person ignores half of a certain
space. For eg. He/she may only eat food from one half of their plate. These
actions are purely unintentional.
Post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – At times when
people go through traumatic experiences and are unable to cope, they may
develop PTSD.
Symptoms may include
flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts.
Mental
health is just as important as your physical health if not more so. Emotionally fit and stable person always feels vibrant
and truly alive and can easily manage emotionally difficult situations. In this age of
social media and internet it has become even more important to take care of our
mental well-being.
If you observe a change in your eating and sleeping
habits, if you have less energy or severe mood swings, or have thoughts of
self-harm and isolation then you may have a mental health problem.
In
such a case try to get therapy as early as possible, communicate your problems
and feelings with your parents and friends. If you relate to any of the mental disorders, then do not
hesitate in seeking treatment. Early treatment can enhance the chances to treat
the disease quickly and easily.
If
you know someone going through the above-mentioned disorders or any of the
other disorders, then you are doing them a world of good just by trying to
understand their problem. Try and reach out to them, you never know when one
kind word may just make someone’s day.
