Take Risks in Life
The magical line said by late.General Bipin Rawat still inspires us to work silently and achieve the milestone. Gen Bipin Rawat was an outstanding soldier and a true patriot. He greatly contributed towards modernization of our armed forces and security apparatus. His insights on strategic matters were exceptional.
Late.General Bipin Rawat was an alumnus of the National Defence Academy. Talking about the life of gen Rawat, he was born in Pauri town of Pauri Garhwal district, present-day Uttarakhand state, on 16 March 1958. His family had been serving in the Indian Army for multiple generations. Taking inspiration from his parents, he served the country with exceptional courage and diligence.
Gen.Rawat had the calibre, the vision and the heart to be the first CDS. Prior to taking over as the CDS, he served as the 57th Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (Chairman COSC) of the Indian Armed Forces and as 26th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army. At the young age of 21, he fought his first war as a part of Gorkha rifles, here started his journey toward excellence.
In 1987, in Sumdorong Chu valley, the Captain Rawat battalion was deployed against the Chinese Army. The standoff was the first military confrontation along the disputed McMahon Line after the 1962 war.
He had spent ten years conducting counter-insurgency operations at a much higher altitude. In June 2015 when 18 Indian soldiers were killed by militants belonging to the United Liberation Front of western south-east Asia, then the Parachute Battalion took revenge by cross-border strikes that were commanded by Mr.Rawat. This was the first time when the Indian Army crossed the borders of Myanmar to take revenge.
The UN mission in Congo when Mr. Rawat commanded MONUSCO(United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is still praised. Within 2 weeks the brigade faced a major offence in the east that threatened to destabilize the country as a whole. The situation demanded a rapid response and North Kivu was reinforced, it was also responsible for the life of over 7000 men and women representing nearly half of the total MONUSCO. Mr.Rawat used his brain wisely, he sensitised programmes with the local population and detailed coordination to ensure that all were informed about the situation. This operation lasted for 4 months and Mr. Rawat with his battalion successfully controlled the situation in Africa. Due to such an outstanding performance by Mr. Rawat, India is still praised and has a good image in the UN. For his bravery, he was twice awarded 'the force commander's commendation'.
He was also part of the planning for the 2016 surgical strikes, in which the Indian Army went across the LOC into Pakistan occupied Kashmir. He was continuously monitoring the situation from the south block in New Delhi.
During his service, General Rawat has been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, and Sena medal. He has also been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award. His exemplary contributions and commitment cannot be put into words.
With profound grief, I have to say this line that On 8 December 2021, gen. Rawat and with his wife died in a helicopter crash. The unfortunate crash has left all of us saddened beyond words. I feel lucky to write some words for such a brave hearted soldier.
